Task 3: Development & Design

Task 3 requires student to create a design based on Task 2 idea, applying design principles in both development and the final piece.

Chosen idea

Sketch idea 1 - Divide The Starry Night into two contrasting halves where half of the artwork is in the original tones and another is in warm tones.

Colour palette:

Inspiration photo:

A harmony blend from the original starry night colour tones to the transition of warmer tones, the movement symbolising hope.

Improvised sketch idea:

I use Illustrator as a medium to portray my idea to improvise the artwork; gradient colour tones.

The contrast of colour tones inspired by another Van Gogh's artwork, Cafe Terrace at Night.

Artist: Vincent Van Gogh
Year: 1888
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 80.7 cm × 65.3 cm (31.8 in × 25.7 in)

Improvised colour tones and gradient:

Development on the textures and brushstrokes (using Illustrator):

Challenges: blending of the colours of the brushstrokes (maybe want to try mixture of mediums using oil pastels or acrylic)

Rationale explaining the decisions made in the design

From the chosen artwork The Starry Night, I decided to do a reimagined version using an illustrator to visualise my idea on the improvisation of the artwork. I chose my sketch idea 1 that envision Starry Night to focus on symbolising hope with the implementation of warmer tones in the artwork.

The design balances contrast and harmony through the deliberate use of cool and warm tones. The strong contrast between these color schemes creates a visually striking effect, while the composition remains symmetrical to maintain stability. To soften the transition between these opposing tones, a gradient of purple has been introduced, allowing for a seamless blend that enhances unity and movement within the piece. The swirling brushstrokes further reinforce this sense of motion, guiding the viewer’s eye fluidly across the artwork.

Beyond aesthetics, the reinterpretation carries symbolic meaning. The warm tones evoke energy, passion, and a sense of hope, providing a fresh perspective on the original work. Meanwhile, the cool tones remain true to Van Gogh’s intended atmosphere of contemplation and melancholy, preserving its emotional depth. This contrast highlights the duality of emotions—hope and introspection—within the scene.

Several design principles are applied to achieve this effect. Contrast is evident in the opposing color schemes, while harmony is maintained through the purple transition. Movement is created through dynamic brushstrokes, ensuring an engaging visual flow. Lastly, symmetry provides balance, preventing the contrast from becoming overwhelming. Together, these elements result in a design that is both visually impactful and emotionally resonant.

Feedback week 5

  • Try adding textures to the illustrator - find any tutorials online on how to add textures to the artwork
  • My idea is to mix medium (digital and manual) to do some brushstrokes manually and sir said i can go for it

Feedback week 6

  • Should use either digital or manual because mixing the mediums would be hard and takes a lot of time
  • The overall artwork is okay but have to play around with the tools (such as brush tool, dashed lines, gradient, blend tool) to improvise
  • Use the dashed line for more uniform strokes - replicate Van Gogh's brushstrokes better

Feedback week 7

  • The final work is so much better
  • The amount of efforts put in the work can be seen
  • Complete final compilation by Thursday
